Sam grew up on an Army base in Wright Texas where his family was able to lead their life as shifters while still concealing themselves. After high school Sam enlisted in the Army himself, but did not find it enjoyable. He used the inheritance from his father's death to start his own life in Bon Temps where he opened a simple modest bar. It's hard to get much out of Sam Merlotte, he's been forced to keep his shifter identity a secret, though he does intend to 'come out' like the vampires did if the rest of the shifter and were community decide to as well. Sam is quiet and personable, most people in the community like him (even in the supernatural community), despite his secretiveness about his past. It takes even Sookie years to learn even the most basic facts of his life before Bon Temps. Sookie is the only person who knows anything about Sam, his love for her has caused him to reveal things to her that he normally would not. His love hasn't always been unrequited, but Sam has the habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time with Sookie Stackhouse. His thoughts can't be read as easily as a human's, but he does occasionally try to broadcast especially well when he thinks things he wants Sookie to hear, or especially jumbled when he does not.

Sam has currently set up a second Merlotte’s and is meeting new friends. Sadly no one has caught his interest yet
